THE number of people being prosecuted for littering on the streets of Enfield has doubled, new figures show.
Four hundred and forty people were hauled before Enfield magistrates in 2010/11, more than double the 220 who appeared in court the year before.
And since April this year, 203 have so far been taken to court for littering in the borough.
Enfield Council, which brought the prosecutions, attributed the rise to a more stringent operation, setting aside a day in court every week to deal with people who have refused to pay the fixed penalty fines.
£64,297 in fines were issued to offenders in 2010/11, with £33,083 in fines handed out since April.
