A SUPERMARKET evacuated on Sunday morning when a fire broke out in the roof of the building has reopened.

Four firefighting crews tackled the blaze at the Asda store in Chase Side and evacuated about 35 staff at about 3am.

The fire engulfed storage trolleys at the side of the building, causing the canopy roof to catch alight and damage the roof tiles of the main building.

In a statement, Asda said: “The fire did cause some damage and contractors are working to repair this.

“After a thorough investigation, the store was opened as normal for customers.”

The fire took two hours to bring under control, and firefighters used a thermal-imaging camera to search the building for internal damage.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
