One man’s trash is another’s treasure and this couldn’t be more true for Enfield artist Alex Tracy.
Empty sugar packets, crumpled napkins or tea bag labels – Alex, who exhibits under the name Ayjay Trashy, transforms them all into stunning, miniature works of art featuring some of the world’s greatest cult icons.
The 39-year-old can often be spotted in local coffee shops creating his masterpieces and has now brought work from the last five years together for an exhibition.
He says: “It’s very much like a story of my life and I’m still adding to it all the time and will be right up until the end."
Dugdale Centre, Thomas Hardy House, London Road, Enfield, until June 7, daily from 9am - 6pm. Details: facebook.com/AyJaytrashy
“Marilyn is a super icon. If it wasn’t for her there wouldn’t be Madonna or Lady Gaga. She has that magic touch and I find her addictive.”
“Madonna and other strong females are very powerful. Looking at them is like looking at the Pyramids.”
“I like a lot of sugar in my tea but there’s a history of diabetes in my family so I also use Sweet ‘n Low and other things.”
“I like thick acrylics, almost like printing, and am inspired by Warhol and powerful colours as I’m quite colour blind.”
“Kate Middleton is very striking and classic and also almost has that vintage feel about her which I like.”
