A parliamentary candidate has called on the FA to review its decision to charge Enfield Town Football Club for fielding an ineligible player.
Labour’s Joan Ryan is urging the FA not to punish the club after player Aryan Tajbakhsh played two matches while suspended.
However, Enfield Town had notified the FA in January of the fact that the player’s former club had not properly reported his previous bookings to the FA.
Ms Ryan has criticised the FA for pursuing the charges so late in the season, especially after the governing body had informed the club that no further action would be taken against it.
Enfield Town qualified for the Ryman Premier League playoffs by one point but could face a three point deduction, denying them a shot at promotion to the Conference South.
Ms Ryan said: “After Enfield Town’s great win against Witham Town over the weekend, the club and its supporters should be looking forward to the playoffs and possible promotion from the Ryman Premier League.
“Instead they are facing an unfair and punitive charge from the FA which could result in them being removed from the playoff picture altogether – this would be an injustice.
“The club is being punished for being open and honest with the FA, whilst the governing body has gone back on its word, after informing Enfield Town that no further action would be taken in relation to Aryan Tajbakhsh. This decision could have huge ramifications for the club and the game in general.
“I’m proud to have been a founder member of Enfield Town FC, when it was created by one of football’s first supporters’ trusts in 2001.”
A decision will be made tomorrow.
