The final results are in for Enfield and Labour has increased its majority on the council by five seats.

Gains for Labour in Chase, Southgate and Winchmore Hill mean Labour now has 46 seats on the council compared to the Tories’ 17.

Labour leader Doug Taylor said the result was “a reflection of the good work done over the past eight years”.

He added: “It is also an indication that the public value public services, and a forceful statement to the government that the people of Enfield want good public services and will not support a party that fails to deliver that.

“Labour has an array of new, enthusiastic, community-based councillors who will do a good job for their residents.

“The council will need to focus on managing the costs imposed by central government funding, but we will continue to plan for the future of the borough, defend front-line services and meet the needs and aspirations of all our residents.”

Despite losing five seats, leader of the Conservative group Joanne Laban was upbeat about her party’s prospects.

“We have managed to keep our seats and made a gain in Bush Hill Park. If you look back at the general election, compared to what has happened now, we have gained, and I am pleased with the result.”

She added that the losses “did not reflect the work the candidates had put into the campaign”.
