This August bank holiday sees the return of the Enfield Food Festival, an annual celebration of the thriving independent food scene in the area at Forty Hall Farm.
Now in its third year, the festival brings together a host of producers and retailers operating in Enfield and the wider north London community, with a focus on high quality, locally-sourced food.
Regular participants include Holtwhites Bakery (Enfield), Wildes Cheese (Tottenham), New River Brewery (Hoddesdon), Gourmet Goat (Borough Market), Wrights Flour (Enfield) and the Farm’s own award-winning Forty Hall Vineyard.
As well as showcasing producers and their goods, the festival features cooking demos, workshops, talks and other activities, aimed at educating festival goers about food. This year’s demonstrations will include foraging walks, kimchi fermenting, food photography, and bread and pizza-making.
Festival founder, Emma Lundie, explains why Enfield is the perfect setting for a food festival: “The borough of Enfield is very lucky. It encompasses urban London, with its exciting diversity, alongside rural greenbelt land with working farms. Such a contrast makes for a special mix of people, food and drink, and we set up Enfield Food Festival to celebrate this.”
Forty Hall Farm manager Kate McGeevor agrees: “Enfield might not have the posh restaurants or trendy cafes of other parts of London, but there is lots going on in the Borough that we can cheer.
“One of the best things about the Food Festival is that it celebrates the old and the new. Wright’s Flour has been producing flour in Enfield for over 150 years, whereas Holtwhites Bakery celebrated its fifth birthday last year. But they are both fantastic local producers and we’re looking forward to welcoming them both back to the Food Festival.”
Forty Hall Farm intends to be a beacon of sustainable organic food production, boasting a market garden, community orchard, rare breed animals and even its own vineyard. The Farm is run by Capel Manor College, London’s leading land-based college.
Enfield Food festival is open from 11am to 5pm on Sunday and Monday this bank holiday weekend. Forty Hall Farm, EN2 9HA. Details: enfieldfoodfestival.com
