A temporary cycle route will be created linking Tottenham and Enfield thanks to a £220,000 funding boost.
Cycle Superhighway 1 (CS1) will join up to Enfield’s mini-Holland network and continue to Ponders End after the project was awarded funding from Transport for London’s (TfL) Streetspace Fund.
It is one of several successful bids made by Haringey Council for money to support projects designed to aid active travel and social distancing.
Although the extension is currently being made on a temporary basis, many of the projects created using the Streetspace Fund could be made permanent at a later date.
Work on the extension to CS1 – which runs through the east of Haringey and on to the City of London – is due to begin in June and finish in September.
A further £472,000 from the Streetspace Fund will be used to improve the existing route, including introducing modal filtering to reduce traffic levels.
In another boost for cycling in Haringey, more than £100,000 will be provided by the Department for Transport for emergency safety improvements.
The money will be used to create ‘light segregation’ to separate cycle lanes from the main carriageway on parts of Station Road, Wood Green High Road, Green Lanes, Ferry Lane and Bounds Green Road.
Haringey Council is awaiting decisions on several other funding bids, including a temporary cycleway linking Finsbury Park and Wood Green.
Cllr Kirsten Hearn (Labour, Stroud Green), cabinet member for climate change and sustainability, said: “At the height of the pandemic, Haringey’s roads were quiet and the air much clearer. As lockdown eases, we are already seeing the return of heavy traffic and pollution – if we are to move away from a rise in car emissions, we need to return to work using climate friendly means such as cycling.
“This is why we are particularly excited to learn our bids for Cycle Superhighway 1 improvements and extension have already received money from TfL. Whilst we wait to hear the outcome from TfL on the rest of the bids, the funding we have secured will be put to good use immediately – to support the safety of our residents on our cycle routes, as well as provide options for active travel that our residents can have confidence in.”
