It is understood that five Haringey councillors have now been suspended by the Labour Party pending investigations.
The Liberal Democrats branded the Labour group “dysfunctional” following the raft of reported suspensions and called on the leadership to focus on responding to the coronavirus pandemic.
Labour says it is focused on keeping residents safe and ensuring council services continue to run “as smoothly as possible”.
It is understood that Preston Tabois (Tottenham Green), Noah Tucker (St Ann’s), Dana Carlin (Hornsey), Vincent Carroll (Tottenham Hale) and Patrick Berryman (Bounds Green) have been suspended by Labour pending investigations.
Although they continue to sit on the council, the councillors are listed as independents on Haringey’s website.
The Ham and High recently reported Cllr Tucker had been suspended for sharing allegedly antisemitic content on social media. Cllr Tucker denied the allegations and said the posts had been “selectively edited” in screenshots sent to the newspaper, adding that he is an “opponent of racism in all its forms including antisemitism”.
Opposition leader Cllr Luke Cawley-Harrison said the number of suspensions shows the Labour group is “dysfunctional”.
Cllr Cawley-Harrison (Lib Dem, Crouch End) added: “We are going through unprecedented times: our borough, like the UK as whole, is seeing rising numbers of Covid cases. Our residents deserve a council leadership focused on that, not one consumed by internal party issues.”
A Haringey Labour spokesperson said: “The sole focus of Haringey’s Labour council is keeping residents safe during this global pandemic.
“Delivering over 20,000 emergency food parcels to more than 3,000 households, spearheading a pan-London procurement agreement for personal protective equipment, all the while keeping existing council services running as smoothly as possible – we are proud of our coronavirus response.
“We will continue to deliver for Haringey residents no matter the circumstances.”
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints extremely seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken.”
All five councillors have been approached for comment.
