A man has died after a serious crash on the M25 on New Year's Day.

The emergency services were called to the anticlockwise carriageway between junction 26 for Waltham Abbey and 25 for Enfield at around 10.45pm.

The Metropolitan Police says three vehicles were involved in a collision including one which left the carriageway and caught fire.

Police say a man was pronounced dead at the scene despite first aid being administered by paramedics and police. His next of kin have been informed.

Detectives from the Met’s serious collisions investigation unit (SCIU) are leading the investigation, with two people in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Detective Sergeant Mark Palmer, said: "A young man has sadly died and it is important that his family and friends know what happened to him. I would ask anyone who was using this stretch of road to check their dashcam footage for any recordings of this incident.

"Likewise any witnesses should get in touch with us immediately."

If you have any information that could help the investigation, call the SCIU Witness Line on 020 8597 4878, or 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD 9322/01Jan.

The M25 was closed anticlockwise for more than 14 hours with a diversion in place.

Highways operator National Highways confirmed at 2.40pm (January 2) that two lanes of four had reopened between junctions 27 and 25. Two stay closed for barrier repairs.
