A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been found guilty of theft and perverting the course of justice.
PC Mohammad Ghalayini was arrested on Wednesday, 24 March 2021 following an investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards.
He was charged on Monday, October 25 and appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 18 last year.
It comes after an incident where a Met employee discovered £80 was missing from a wallet that had been handed to police and reported it internally.
PC Ghalayini was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court on, Thursday, September 29, and the Met Police have now confirmed he has been suspended from duty.
They added that internal misconduct proceedings will now follow.
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, from the Met’s North Area Basic Command Unit, said: “It is bitterly disappointing that an officer has acted in such a deceitful way.
“It is really important that people have more trust in us, and this sort of thing understandably undermines confidence in the police.
"Across the Met we are working to clear out those who corrupt us and let down the public, who deserve a great service from us.”
