A bingo hall could close to make way for 623 new student rooms and 77 flats.

An employee at the Mecca Bingo in Lordship Lane, Wood Green, who did not wish to be named, told this paper that staff have been informed that the venue will shut before the end of this month.

They said that they felt sorry for young staff members who would now be left without a job, as well as those who use the club.

They added: “We don’t have hundreds of people here, but in the morning, you have about 20 or 30 sitting there, they’re regulars. Where are they going to go?”

Mecca Bingo claims it is “discussing a proposal” to close the club, and would inform customers as soon as a decision is finalised.

Developer Tri7 and student accommodation provider Fusion Group have applied to Haringey Council to demolish the existing building.

Four buildings of between three and nine storeys would be built on the site, providing new homes and hundreds of student rooms.

A Mecca Bingo spokesperson said: “We are discussing a proposal to close our club on Lordship Lane, Wood Green.

“We are in consultation with our team and will inform our customers as soon as a decision is finalised.”
