AN OLD-FASHIONED May Day is on the cards this week for children at West Grove Primary School.

The school in Chase Road, Southgate has organised a celebration of the ancient Pagan festival with Maypole dancing, refreshments and music.

Southgate MP, David Borrowes and Enfield Council Mayor, Lee Chamberlain will be among the guests of honour.

May Day was originally associated with the Gaelic Beltane festival, the European Walpurgis Night and the Roman goddess of flowers Flora and was an occasion for a raucous party.

After England was Christianised, the Pagan associations were sublimated into symbols, such as dancing around the maypole and crowing the Queen of the May.

Competitions to see who is West Grove's best Mayday dancer will start at 10.30am.
