A SUPERMARKET has been fined £1,750 for selling alcohol to an underage drinker.
Ozzies Off Licence, in Enfield Road, was fined £1,635 and ordered to pay a contribution to costs of £100 and £15 victim surcharge by Enfield Magistrates on June 4.
The supermarket was prosecuted after staff member Omer Demirel sold alcohol to the 15-year-old during a test by Enfield Council.
Mr Demirel was fined £135, and ordered to pay a contribution to costs of £100 and victim surcharge of £15, by magistrates.
Enfield Council’s cabinet member for the environment has criticised what he calls a "mindless minority of shopkeepers who sell booze to youngsters".
Councillor Terry Neville said: "There seems to be a hardcore of shopkeepers who simply do not realise that selling alcohol to youngsters is like handing a loaded gun to a child – you know sooner or later someone, somewhere, is going to get hurt.
"My message to this mindless minority is, we will prosecute you and you will lose far more than the few pence you made."
