A MARCH in support of refused asylum seekers will be held next week.
The Palmers Green and Barnet branch of Amnesty International have organised a demonstration with the Refugee Council, Refugee Action, Hackney Refugee and Migrant Support Group, London Detainee Support Group, and Barnet Amnesty International.
The March will take place on June 20 as part of Refugee Week, starting at 12 noon at the Embankment.
The march will continue through Westminster and on to Trafalgar Square where a rally will take place in support of asylum seekers.
According to Amnesty International, a report by the Independent Asylum Commission, released in March last year, states that the UK’s treatment of asylum seekers “falls seriously below the standards of civilised society”.
The Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP wrote in a recent report for the Centre for Social Justice that "the policy of making asylum seekers destitute is mean and nasty and has not worked".
Speakers at the rally include Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, Donna Covey, director of the Refugee Council, Jean Roger Kaseki, human rights campaigner from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Marilyn Bonzo, refugee from Zimbabwe and Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism.
