FAMILIES came out to play today in one of Enfield biggest parks.

The free Play Day event featured bouncy castles, clay pits, giant blackboards, a dance music DJ and the popular Crazy Bears stage show.

Children had plenty to occupy them with sand and clay pits, paint stilts, poi and juggling balls.

Football and other games were organised and a mobile library was also open for business in the park.

But under the heat of the sun maybe the most popular of all was the sprinkler area.

Mother Martha Athuhuri, 27, of Kirkland Drive, Enfield, was at the park with her daughter, Astrid Ngouabeu.

She said: “It's really nice, I've had a really nice time. I think it could be happening all the time we would love it.”

Youthworker Brenda Abbott, 64, of Gladbeck Way, Enfield, came with her grandson Archie Abbott-Drummond who is six and gave a thumbs up to the day.

“We came last year and there were more people this year. The council should do more things like this,” she said.

Mayor Cllr Eleftherios Savva said: “It's been fantastic. We are using the parks to the maximum and we want to get families into the parks and to give families with children a cheap day out.”

Alongside the fun were serious messages about council services for children, adoption, fostering, education, health and the council's pathfinder, or playground, schemes.

Andrew Fraser, co-director of education, children's service and leisure, said: “It is National Play Day all over the country but I don't think anywhere would have had as good an event as we have had in Enfield.

“It gives us a chance to tell people about all the really good things we are doing in Enfield such as the children's pathfinder schemes. It's really innovative stuff.”
