I read Averil Dongworth's recent letter with disbelief - she appears to be suggesting that we would be better off with paramedics than an accident and emergency department that is accessible to Enfield residents.

Do we therefore ring 999 and ask for a paramedic team instead of going to Chase Farm hospital?

Of course paramedics are wonderful people, they do a difficult and at times dangerous job with amazing skill compassion and dedication. We could not do without them.

As Ms Dongworth says they saved many lives during the London bombings, but I'm sure they then got their patients to hospital in record time when the rest of London traffic was shut down - so don't cloud the issue Ms Dongworth.

As for better care, I cannot belive the doctors and nurses are not worried about this crazy idea, which is nothing but an exercise in cost-cutting.

If it is as successful as the merger with Barnet Hospital in this respect it will prove to be another financial disaster, as well as a medical one.
