We have the opportunity to vote for a better voting system on May 5.

Those opposed to the alternative vote are stooping very low indeed. They seem hell-bent on creating confusion and seem to have no qualms about peddling distortions of the truth.

Flimsy arguments and false analogies abound in their literature. The claim that expensive electronic counting machines will be used is wrong.

No one, including the Electoral Commission, is recommending these be used. The analogy with athletes running in a race is laughable.

Runners do not get differing amounts of votes they merely have finishing positions. MPs being sent to the House of Commons by, for instance, 30 per cent or so of the voters is flat wrong when an alternative voting system is readily available. Giving voters the chance to rank candidates in order of preference, one, two, three is as easy as, well, one, two, three.

Taking second and third preferences into account will result in candidates who command 50 per cent plus of the votes winning. How can anyone object to that? Vote yes on May 5.
