In the latest issue of Our Enfield just received, on page 19, I quote: “The bottom line is we will deliver value for money in everything we do, so that we can protect our frontline services — that is what you the residents expect and deserve.”
Relating this statement to the reportedly staggering amount of £200,000 Enfield Council has earmarked to be spent on a five-month cultural festival (extravaganza?) in Enfield, the mind boggles.
Let’s be real. Surely in these times of austerity, if money is available, could it not be better spent on more urgent and deserving needs in our borough (adult social services and libraries have been mentioned).
On the other hand and not wishing entirely to be a kill-joy, surely our imaginative councillors could apply a lesser amount, say £50,000 to buy a reduced programme of cultural pleasures if this indeed is regarded by the Enfield community as a priority need.
