CHILDREN at an Enfield school have raised £1,000 for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Students at Southgate School, in Sussex Way, decided to hold a non-uniform day for Years 7 to 10 on Friday, April 8, after they learned of the devastation victims of the disaster were suffering.
Teacher Samantha Howlett-Bolton said: “I am very proud of how many children got involved and that we are sending a cheque to the British Red Cross for a massive £1,000.
“This will make a real difference in helping with the costs of the relief effort, and of rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected.”
4,704 people are now known to have died in the disaster and another 10,969 remain missing after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11.
Japan's government announced a £30 billion emergency budget last week to help fund the reconstruction efforts.
