I have just read the item about the retirement of the “first black head teacher in Enfield”, appointed in 1998. (‘Retiring head recalls challenges and success’, Enfield Independent, April 13.) She may have been the first black secondary head teacher to be appointed, but when I retired in 1988, a full ten years earlier, my successor to the headship of Brimsdown Infants School was Tsitsi Kelly, a black lady born in Zimbabwe.
She was a popular, hard-working, innovative head, pioneering the use of computers by primary school children.
I am not sure if the fact that she was the first black head teacher in Enfield was noted when she retired, but I would like to be sure that her precedence is acknowledged now.
