POLICE are hunting for the driver of a car believed to have knocked down and killed a man on Saturday night.

A silver-coloured BMW was spotted speeding away from Carterhatch Lane shortly after hitting a 44-year-old man on the railway bridge.

Police and paramedics were called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed but he has not yet been formally named.

Detectives believe the driver headed towards the A10 following the crash, at around 11.30pm, and have appealed for information and eyewitnesses to come forward.

The BMW involved is likely to have suffered damage to its front end, police say, as well as losing a wing-mirror, and could also have a damaged roof.

Anyone who can help police with the investigation can contact the Road Death Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on 0208 597 4871 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
