In further news from the “you couldn’t make it up” department.
Conservative councillor Jon Kaye scores a spectacular own goal by making sneering and derisory comments about an initiative organised by Enfield’s Labour-run council to encourage women in the borough to get some healthy exercise while raising money for local cancer charities (‘A fine route at night’, Opinion, May 25).
He takes issue with the route not passing through Trent Park and Forty Hall, which are very dark at night, instead favouring a well-lit route through areas of the borough which Cllr Kaye clearly doesn’t think are “glitzy” enough; indeed, his remark about the US Navy Seals seems to infer that he thinks Ponders End and Edmonton are as dangerous as bin Laden’s lair, but surely he can’t be suggesting that?
Anyone with an ounce of sense would realise that marshals are required to ensure that “the borough’s fair maidens” walk in the right direction, not because they need protection — and those expecting walkers to be wearing skimpy bedroom attire will be severely disappointed and need not apply.
I am pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the first Enfield Night Hike and have heard that the wife of the MP for Enfield North will be among the walkers so it’s cheering to know that Cllr Kaye’s comments represent his own views rather than those of the Conservative Party in general.
