THE COMPANY set to build a £27 million school building in Ponders End has been revealed.
Oasis Academy Hadley in Bell Lane has been given funding by the Department for Education to move from its current site to a brand new building on the former gasworks in South Street, Ponders End.
Construction company Balfour Beatty will start building the school in August, with primary students moving to the new site in September next year - secondary and sixth form pupils will join them in January 2013.
The developers must still gain planning permission from Enfield Council, but this is likely to be a formality.
School principal Lynne Dawes said: “The new academy building will provide education for children and young people in superb facilities. “Many of the facilities, including the sports areas, will be available for community use.
“Each area of the academy will have state-of-the-art facilities, rich in IT, providing exciting learning areas for our students.”
The three-storey school will eventually cater for more than 1,900 students – with classrooms protected from traffic noise by extensive tree planting around the building.
Councillor Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools and children, said: “It is an exciting time as plans are made to spend the £27.2 million budget on a building that lies at the heart of the Ponders End community.
“It will be part of a general regeneration scheme for the whole area.
The academy was created in 2009, replacing Albany School, and accepting primary pupils for the first time in September 2010.
In February, Ofsted announced that the school was “rising quickly”, after GCSE results were poor in 2010.
