POLICE officers are today stationed at a level crossing in Enfield where a man died in August last year.

Mircea Adam, 20, was hit and killed by a Stansted Express train after jumping over the barrier at Enfield Lock level crossing.

British Transport Police have chosen the level crossing in Ordnance Road and another in Northumberland Park, Tottenham, to station officers today to mark International Level Crossing Awareness Day.

The initiative is aimed at educating drivers and pedestrians of the dangers of improperly using a level crossing.

Superintendent Paul Brogden, who is leading today's operation, said: “This education and enforcement initiative gives us another opportunity to drive home the message that running the risk at a level crossing is just not worth it.

“By trying to save a few seconds, you could end up seriously hurt or losing your life.

“Incredibly some people are still putting their lives on the line by ignoring warning lights and sirens and trying to dash through crossings when trains are approaching.

“This is hugely irresponsible and dangerous and we will not hesitate to take action against anyone caught doing so.”

The operation, which started at 9am and continues until 3pm, is in association with AA DriveTech and Network Rail to warn motorists of the dangers of ignoring level crossing signals.

Following Mr Adam's death last year, several residents of Ordnance Road spoke out to the Enfield Indpendent, calling for tighter controls on level crossings to prevent further fatalities.
