CARERS from across the borough have been taking part in a week of events to highlight their work.
As part of National Carers Week, staff at Enfield Carers Centre in Baker Street organised activities such as a trip to the seaside, a healthy living day, and seminars about the pressures of the role.
According to figures from the centre, there are 29,000 unpaid carers in the borough, but only 1,200 of them are registered – leaders want to increase this number dramatically.
Chief Executive Tony Shepherd said: “Many carers in Enfield suffer due to a lack of understanding about their role as carers – some don’t even recognise themselves as carers.
“This can have a very negative impact on their health, finances, working and social life as well as general well-being.
“Our aim is to empower and support unpaid carers throughout the Borough and help them to have a better quality of life.”
The week of events culminates in a ceremony at Forty Hall today to crown Enfield's carer of the year.
