CARERS from Enfield were honoured at a special awards ceremony at Forty Hall on Friday evening.

The inaugural Carer of the Year Awards were organised by Enfield Carers Centre to highlight the work done by unpaid carers across the borough, as part of National Carers Week.

Inderjit Singh, 81, won the gong and was presented with a glass trophy by chief executive Tony Shepherd.

The Cannonsbury Road resident has been caring for her son, who has learning difficulties, for 53 years, as well as two grandchildren.

Mr Shepherd said: “The calibre of nominations for this award was extremely high, and all the carers nominated were exceptional.”

There was also a special prize for the Young Carer of the Year, which was given to 16-year-old Mira Hook, who cares for her mother, older sister and grandfather – on top of studying for her GCSEs.

According to figures from the centre, there are 29,000 unpaid carers in the borough, but only 1,200 of them are registered – leaders want to increase this number dramatically.
