A FORMER Mayor of Enfield will fight for the vacant council seat in Bush Hill Park for the Conservatives.

Lee Chamberlain, who served as a councillor for Southbury ward for eight years from 2002 until he was booted out by the electorate in 2010, has been announced as the party's candidate.

Mr Chamberlain was elected as mayor in 2008/09, and helped to raise more than £33,000 for his chosen charity the Nightingale Community Hospice during his term of office.

After his selection by the local Tory party, he said he is “delighted” to have got the nod, and added: “It’s a great area and should I be elected I will work hard for its residents and the borough by standing up for the issues that matter to local people and ensuring that residents get value for money from their council tax.”

The seat in Bush Hill Park came open following last week's resignation of Eleftherios Savva, who had been splitting his time between the UK and Cyprus, helping a family member with personal problems.

Mr Chamberlain will go into the race as a strong favourite in a traditionally Conservative ward.

The by-election will take place on July 28.
