CHILDREN at an Enfield special school are appealing for votes in a TV competition that could win them £60,000.

Durants School in Pitfield Way is a finalist in tonight's ITV's People's Jubilee Millions, that sees lottery money handed to projects viewers vote for.

Staff are bidding for funding to turn some of the school's grounds into a sensory garden for the pupils, who are autistic and have other learning difficulties.

The project's leader, Eddi Banks, said: “We have an opportunity to transform an overgrown piece of land into a sensory and social garden for the children and their families.

“The space will enable families to come together in a safe and secure environment without the child with special needs being excluded from other children.

“Socialising is something we all take for granted but many of our families feel very isolated and the garden will help change this.”

The school is being supported in its bid by Enfield Council and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, who sent former captain Gary Mabbutt to the school last week as part of its appeal to fans to vote.

He said: “It’s important we support our local community – the Durants School is a short distance away from the club’s new training facility and they have a real need for this garden.

“It would make a monumental difference to the lives of the children attending this school and it’s something that we can all help make happen – so I’m hoping our fans will watch the programme and vote for this worthy cause.”

To vote for the project, call 0871 626 88 47 before midnight tonight.

Calls cost 11p per call from BT landlines. Calls from other networks may be higher and from mobiles will considerably more. No profits are made by ITV or the Big Lottery Fund from your calls. The voting lines will open at 9 am on the day of broadcast and close at midnight. Calls made after closing time won’t be counted but may still be charged. Full terms & conditions at itv.com
