TEACHERS across Enfield have walked out on strike this morning in a row over pensions.

More than 60 schools in the borough have shut their doors for the day, while another 14 will only be running part of normal classes. Only five Enfield schools are unaffected by the industrial action.

The strike, which could see as many as 750,000 workers from four trade unions joining in, is in protest at Government plans to cut pensions, raise the retirement age and increase contributions.

The four trade unions include three teaching unions - the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Association of Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the University and College Union (UCU).

They will be joined by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), which has around 250,000 members.

Many of the capital's striking teachers are expected to join a march through central London starting at 11am, which will culminate in a rally in Whitehall.

p> Travellers have also been warned to expect delays on arrival at UK ports and airports.

People leaving the country will not be affected because departing passengers will come into contact with security staff employed by airport operator BAA, who will not be striking.
