THE majority of roads in Enfield should have 20mph speed limits, an aspiring councillor has said.
Douglas Coker has been announced as the Green Party candidate for the by-election in Bush Hill Park, pledging to pursue an environmental agenda if elected.
Mr Coker, a resident in the ward since 1998, said: “The recent Conservative administration did very little in pursuit of the green agenda. A bit here and a statement there but so much more could have been done.
“The current Labour administration has produced lots of documentation and reports and needs to turn this into really significant action.
“A Green councillor would be able to pressure the council to introduce a raft of green measures across the ward and borough.”
He said the council should be tackling the “increasing dominance of the car” with 20mph zones in most roads in the ward and across Enfield, tackling congestion and emissions to the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists.
Mr Coker also pledged to pursue an agenda of ensuring homes are insulated and renewable energy sources and properly considered.
A long-standing activist for the Green Party, Mr Coker is a member of the Bush Hill Park Residents’ Association, the Enfield Alliance Against the Cuts and the local United Nations Association.
The by-election is due to be held on Thursday, July 28, following the resignation of Tory councillor Eleftherios Savva.
Candidates announced so far are Lee Chamberlain (Conservative), Mr Coker, Paul Smith (Lib Dem), and Ben Weald (English Democrat).
