A NEW Southgate man who tried to cover up his friend's involvement in a fatal crash is facing jail.

Mohammed Aghaie, 21, picked up Arman Kassra following the smash in Finchley last year which killed 35-year-old Slovakian Libor Kuchar.

Kassra's VW Golf careered off the road at 2am, hitting two pedestrians and crashing into a wall before bursting into flames.

The 22-year-old was over the legal drink driving limit, but fled the scene of the crash in Aghaie's BMW before police arrived.

Despite his efforts to escape, Kassra, of Hendon, was arrested later that day and Aghaie, of Weld Place, New Southgate, was detained by police four days later.

Kassra was yesterday jailed at Wood Green Crown Court for seven years after admitting causing death by careless driving whilst over the alcohol limit, and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Aghaie pleaded guilty to perverting the cause of justice, fraud by false representation, making a false statement to obtain insurance, and driving without insurance.

He has been remanded in custody for sentencing on July 29.
