A TRAIL of destruction has been left in Enfield Town after riots throughout the night which spread to Ponders End and Edmonton.

Bricks and bottles litter Church Street and Silver Street, which have been closed by police while an investigation continues.

Shops – including Starbucks, HMV and G. Mantella jewellers – were pelted with rubble and looted as more than 200 rioters repeatedly charged through the town, clashing with police.

After riot police pushed back the rioters along Southbury Road, down side-streets including Queens Road, the violence spread to the retail park at the junction with Great Cambridge Road, before sporadic looting in Ponders End and Edmonton Green.

It appears that the disorder was organised via social networking sites Twitter and Facebook early on Sunday, and groups of hooded youngsters began to arrive around Enfield Town Station at about 6.30pm.

Police said that across London – including riots in Brixton and Walthamstow – more than 100 arrests were made and nine officers were injured, while eyewitness reports suggest motorists and passers-by were also targeted.

Council leader Doug Taylor called the violence “unacceptable”, while calling for a full police investigation.
