With no senior rugby at the weekend first team squad member George Cox donned his junior colours and played a pivotal role in Enfield Ignatians’ mixed age group 33-24 win over Datchworth.
The in-form scrum half made the single biggest contribution to his side’s victory after landing a try and four conversions for a final haul of 13 points.
In what was a close game in the first half, Ignatians edged 12-5 in front at the interval after James Charles latched onto a field kick and Cox’s arching run from the back of the scrum.
The second half remained close as both sides got points on the board despite breakaway efforts from Sam Jones and Nathaniel Clarke but Datchworth replied in kind each time.
But Jones emerged as the hero as he intercepted a pass out of the air and he tucked away the opportunity with victory guaranteed.
Coach Steve Renny said: "I told the team at half-time that they needed to step-up and to make sure that they were at least a try (five points) in front.
“We kept the pressure on and it paid off as we made the game safe with an interception try in the final minutes."
