THE Enfield & Haringey AC junior team fought back from sixth place to third in the second National Junior Athletic League match to keep their hopes of a place in the national final alive.
Enfield & Haringey arrived at the Thames Valley Athletic Centre, Eton, last Sunday, lying fourth in the Southern Premier Division but their eventual third match-place takes them up to third, leapfrogging local rivals Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, because EHAC’s total points gathered over the first two matches was superior to the Hendon club’s.
Torema Dorsett stormed to a win in the women’s 100m, just dipping under the 12 second barrier with 11.91. Angelika Brown added more precious points in the B 100m race with her 12.44 seconds win. Jordan Arthur was a convincing winner in the B 200m with 22.00 seconds. Dee Bakre provided her usual first place in the triple jump (11.09) despite a strained ankle and Jasmin Hicks – earlier second in the pole vault with 3.05m – picked up good points with a win in the B string. Dee also took third in the long jump with a leap of 5.36m with Kike Solanke (4.85m) first in the B strings.
Ben Nagy ran the final lap of the 3000m in 63 seconds to take first place and set his fifth PB (8:40.54) of the season while Alex Milne set his own PB (9:25.69) in taking second in the B event. Another exciting last lap saw Adil Hussein pick off runner after runner in the 2000m steeplechase, just pipping Dean Scott - the EHAC A string runner - and, ironically, taking himself from first in the B race to fifth in the A. Both Adil (6:38.59) and Dean (6:38.95) set personal bests.
Hilary Arredondo came out of an injury induced lay-off from racing to take second place in the 1500m steeplechase (5:57.52) and Anna Sharrock ran 6:07.98 to win the B race. Enfield & Haringey claimed more wins in the vertical jumps as Chris Baker cleared two metres in the high jump and Jordan Henwood curled over 4.10m in the pole vault.
The relays provided two victories in the 4 x 100m races with the men’s quartet of Sean Safo-Antwi, Jordan Arthur, Rhion Samuel and James McLean recording 42.09 seconds and the women’s squad of Angelika Brown, Natasha White, Phillippa Tappin and Torema Dorsett was a clear winner in 47.99 seconds.
On Saturday 13th June, two senior EHAC members set new personal bests in the British Milers Club Nike Grand Prix at Watford. Paddy Hamilton was an outstanding winner of one of the 5000m races in 14:17.4 for an eight second PB and Shaun Collins finished fifth in the 3km steeplechase with 9:10.60, his fifth PB of the season. But for a totally uncharacteristic slowing over the last two laps, Collins would have beaten the qualifying standard (9:10) for the July Aviva World Championships Trials.
