JOINT manager Steve Newing believes the Enfield Town players will be inspired by fellow boss Del Deanus this season.

Deanus was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year, while the pair were in charge of Edgware Town.

The duo now hold the reins at Goldsdown Road.

Speaking about his colleague, Newing said: “We don’t really talk about Del’s condition. He is going to stay involved in football for as long as he can.

“The players don’t really require motivating when they see how Del does not let his condition get in the way of his ability to manage players.

“When you look at what he has gone through, football is irrelevent. Things are put into perspective.”

Newing and Deanus were appointed joint managers of Ryman League Division One North Enfield Town last month.

They have worked together as joint managers for nine years and have specialised in reversing the fortunes of clubs strapped for cash.

But Newing is looking forward to working with resources he will have dreamed of in his previous posts at Edgware, Leyton FC and Welwyn Garden City.

He said: “Enfield Town is a big club at this level and it has a big fan base, so when the job came along I jumped at it.

“Del and I were at Welwyn Garden City but we were honest with the board and said we would jump ship if we got a better offer, though Enfield is the only serious offer we’ve had.”

The pair saved City from relegation in the Spartan South Midland League last year, before grabbing the opportunity to work at Town.

Newing said: “We want to bring in players who are not driven by the pound note, and that want to play together. We hope to have a squad of 26 to 28 lads by the beginning of the season.”

And if the new recruits are looking for inspiration when arriving at their new surroundings, they should look no further than Deanus.
