ENFIELD & Haringey AC’s U20 team faces a daunting task as it tries to qualify for the National Junior League finals in September.

On Sunday at Norman Park, Bromley, EHAC finished third of the eight Southern Premier division clubs where the leading club and reigning champions, Blackheath & Bromley, was pushed – at home - into second place by a resurgent Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.

This means that Enfield & Haringey must win the last match – when it will have home advantage – and Blackheath must finish second with either Shaftesbury or Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow – both currently on 19 league points to EHAC’s 17 – in fourth place.

One of the highlights of the meeting for EHAC was Ben Nagy’s strong running over 1500m. Content to let a guest runner build up a long lead, Ben moved into first place on the second lap and then started to make inroads into the gap between himself and the leader on the third lap. Storming around the last 400m in 60 seconds Nagy took the maximum match points in 4:00.3 as he sprinted by the guest down the home straight.

The men’s high jump competition witnessed a double win from the EHAC duo of Chris Baker (2.05m) and Leron Norbert (1.95m); Baker had also won the B string 110m hurdles in 15.2. Amirrieza Zarei had a busy afternoon as well, winning both the discus (41.53m) and the shot (13.47m).

Dee Bakre was also kept well occupied with the long jump, javelin, her speciality the triple jump, which she won with an 11.41m effort, and a stint in the EHAC quartet which was second in the 4x100m relay. The men’s squad went one place better as they came home in 42.5 to salvage some pride at the end of a long day.
