ENFIELD & Haringey AC teams were in action in three leagues last weekend, while some of the club’s promising youngsters represented Middlesex in the Southern Inter-Counties championship.
The senior men’s team improved their chances of remaining in the British League’s Premier Division by finishing fifth at Copthall on Saturday. The EHAC stand-out performance came from Darren St Clair when the 800m specialist – he is ranked second in the UK with 1:46.56 – startled the onlookers by winning the A string 400m in 46.17 seconds, a time that is good enough to place him tenth on the UK 400m lists.
St Clair followed this up with another outstanding run on the last leg of the 4 x 400m. Taking over in second place, Darren just failed to snatch first place despite running his 400 stretch in 45.5 seconds – duplicating fellow club member Seb Coe’s fastest relay leg from the golden era of British middle distance running.
Other outstanding one lap performances saw Ben Sumner win the A string 400m hurdles in 51.32 seconds and Aaron Trim – on reduced training after injuring an ankle in the previous BAL match – take second in the B 400m with 47.70 seconds. Akeem Ogunyemi ran 10.75 into a head wind to win the A string 100m and Leron Norbert cleared 1.98m in the B High Jump to take maximum points for first place.
The previous Wednesday, steeplechaser Shaun Collins had won a British Milers Club 800m in a personal best of 1:53.98 but had not expected to be asked - on the morning of the BAL match - to run the B string two lap race as well as the 5000m. However, with the regular 800m representative going down with 'flu, Shaun stepped into the gap and produced his eleventh PB of the season when he finished third in 1:53.78.
A weary Leon Baptiste finished second in the 100m B race and ran the last leg of the third-placing sprint relay squad. Back from injury. Luke Fagan was second in the A 200m race and Ben Nagy ran for a solid third in the 3km steeplechase.
At Grangemouth on Saturday, the Enfield & Haringey AC senior women’s team finished third in the UK Women’s League Division 2 match which confirmed a third place finish on the final league tables.
Torema Dorset, fresh from representing Great Britain in the European Junior Championships where she finished seventh in the 100m, maintained her recent excellent form with a win in the match 100m, recording 11.67 seconds. Margaret Adeoye was timed at 24.31 in winning the A string 200m and Dee Bakre took the B Long Jump with a 5.58m leap, just 3cm short of Davinia Houston’s second placing A string performance. Dee took second spot in the A Triple Jump with 11.83m.
At Battersea, the senior men’s B team took third spot in the last Southern Men’s League match of the season to clinch sixth place in the 25 club-strong Division One. A recent convert to 800m racing, Shaka Palmer dropped back down to 400m and took the A string honours in 49.5, while Kirtis Greenaway – also a 400m turned 800m racer – was first equal in the B 800m and reduced his seven day old PB to 1:58.8. Tyrell Boatswain was first in the B 100m with 11.2 and Errol Houston won the B 400m with 51.8.
Down in Crawley, Mark Babatunde heaved the 5kg ball 14.52m to win the U17 Southern Counties Inter-Counties Shot Putt. In the girls 100m, Bianca Williams ran 12.46 seconds to win the B string race.
Paddy Hamilton, whose season had got off to a good start with a 5000m win in 14:18 but then suffered a calf injury, finished fifth in the All-Ireland 5000m at the weekend, recording 14:48.05.
