Enfield FC's preparations for the new season continued steadily as they registered a creditable draw on Saturday at Southern League Premier Division side East Thurrock United.

The Es, who start life in Division One East a league below East Thurrock with a tough game away at Waltham Forest on August 13, got off to a flying start and found themselves two-goals up after just 20 minutes.

Moments after kick-off, the home defence got itself into an awful mess, which culminated in Es striker Jeff Hammond being scythed down in the box by United's Simon Tickner.

Dave Hunt stroked home the resulting penalty.

On 20 minutes Enfield were two-nil up. Jeff Hammond was the tormentor, running past a shell-shocked home defence to score easily with a neat lob.

East Thurrock made wholesale changes after that, and though they were without several of the players who helped them gain promotion from Division One East last season, they did improve as a result, pulling a goal back from the penalty spot before the break.

After half-time Owen Beale scored a rare goal for Enfield to bring the score to 3-1.

Both sides had further chances but it was the home side who made the most of a makeshift Enfield pairing at the heart of the defence to grab a barely-deserved draw.

Manager Paul Wildman and his men continue their build-up with a visit to Buntingford Town on Saturday, before an away game at Haringey Borough next Wednesday.
