The senior men at Enfield & Haringey Athletics Club heaved a collective sigh of relief on Saturday night, after they avoided relegation from the top tier of British athletics on the final day of the league season.

At the start of play on Saturday, Enfield & Haringey's men were lying bottom of the British Athletic League's Division One table. But in the end they did enough to justify team manager Ray Gibbins' prediction that they had the talent to pull a get-out-of-jail-free card'.

Their fourth-placed finish at New River Stadium, Wood Green, was enough to see them finish the season sixth out of eight teams in the league and maintain their Division One status for another season.

As it was, Gibbins was disappointed with finishing fourth because they could easily have taken third, had they finished the 4x100m relay. However, sprinter Matt Walker had the batton knocked out his hand.

A relieved Gibbins said: "We went into the lead after six events and were third for most of the afternoon."

The inclusion of several under-17 and under-20s in the team bodes well for the future. Gibbins will be hoping they will fulfil their potential to ensure things are not so hairy next year.
