ENFIELD AND HARINGEY finished sixth in the first British League match at Cardiff on Saturday.
In spite of 12 of the team being unavailable due to injury, Enfield and Haringey still managed a respectable performance in Wales. The club’s only A string-winner was Ben Nagy, who ran a well-paced race in the steeplechase for a very good time of 9.58 in extremely windy conditions.
Another excellent performance was recorded by Mark Johnson, who broke the Over-45 British record in the pole vault with a jump of 4.6m.
The most successful events for the club were in the middle distance races where Jon Pepper came second in the 5000m in a time of 14.43. Mark Sanford was second in the B-string in 15.11 and Chris Crawford won the B-string 1500m in 3.57.
A very encouraging performance was also recorded by 17-year-old Chijindu Ujah in the A-string 100m with a time of 10.68 against some experienced senior sprinters.
The next league match is at Copthall Barnet on July 2 and team manager Malcolm Blackmore is hoping for at least one place higher if some of the injured athletes make a full recovery.
