Enfield Ignatians have reported back for pre-season training earlier than usual in a bid to gain a head start on their rivals.
An estimated 30 players from the first and second teams joined some new faces at Donkey Lane last week as they look to familiarise themselves with each other and the tactics.
Coach Emile Hertz used the early session as an opportunity to cast his eye over the new recruits as well as assessing the fitness of his squad.
Hertz said: “For a period of six weeks we will be going over set plays and defensive patterns, but, above all, the aim is to facilitate better integration between the first and second teams and to make sure that everyone is up to speed with the calls.”
The players will train weekly until July 12 when the whole club will start training twice a week.
The club are always looking for new recruits of all abilities and those interested should contact Rob Wyer on 07956 458560.
The Ignatians’ clubhouse has also undergone a facelift in preparation for the new season.
Club member Steve O’Toole ensured that the club were able to make use of funds available through the RBS Rugbyforce scheme.
The scheme is run nationwide as a community volunteer programme which allows local rugby clubs to improve their facilities.
Thanks to the programme, 20 volunteers were on hand to pitch in with a variety of tasks, ensuring the club is in good shape for the coming season.
