Team GB’s men’s water polo side’s Olympic adventure is over after they were heavily beaten by Montenegro this afternoon.
There was plenty of London interest in the British squad with West Wickham’s Sean King starting for the hosts.
In reserve, Team GB were able to call upon the services of Enfield-born Jack Waller as well as Carshalton’s Matt Holland.
Britain were looking to sign of their Olympic campaign with a win having suffered successive defeats in their group games to date.
They made a bright start as they won the ball and went on the attack but were immediately met by an aggressive Montenegrin defence.
And once the hosts had lost possession, they soon found themselves on the back foot, with Aleksandar Ivovic opening the scoring.
Britain didn’t look overawed by their opponents but they soon found themselves three goals down, with Montenegro extending their advantage through Vladimir Gojkovic and Boris Zlokovic.
They did respond before the end of the first period however, as Adam Scholefield received the ball with his back to goal and neatly turned it into the net.
It was not a sign of things to come however, as they conceded again before the end of the first period, with Zlokovic bagging his second of the contest.
Nikola Janovic and Predrag Jokic increased Montenegro’s lead to 6-1 early in the second period but a well-worked goal from Team GB saw them respond – patiently passing the ball around until the unmarked Glen Robinson was able to pick his spot.
Montenegro refused to let Britain gain any momentum in the contest however, and they duly responded instantly.
Aleksandar Radovic, who had been excluded when Robinson struck, made an immediate impression upon his return by firing into the net to restore the five-goal advantage at 7-2.
Rob Parker pulled one back again for Team GB but Montenegro were able to strike again before the half was out, with Zlokovic getting his third of the game.
The goals dried up in the third period as neither side were able to add to the score until, with just over a minute left to play, three came along at once.
Team GB skipper Craig Figes was the first to strike as he cut the deficit but Montenegro were able to first cancel out the effort before moving further ahead as Radovic netted ahead of Mladan Janovic getting himself on the scoreboard with just 12 seconds of the period remaining.
And it was all one-way traffic in the final quarter as Montenegro rounded off a convincing victory.
Mladan Janovic first grabbed his second of the game after good work from Gojkovic before Ivovic also secured a personal brace by finishing off a counter-attacking move.
And with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, Radovic completed his hat trick from long range, ensuring it was a miserable end to the Olympic campaign for Britain.
