There will be no British representation in the women’s 200m final at the London Olympics after both Margaret Adeoye and Abi Oyepitan failed to make it through the semi finals.
Enfield & Haringey AC’s Adeoye went in heat one of the semis but could only manage seventh place in a competitive race which saw Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown home first in 22.32.
Adeoye crossed the line in 23.28 and although it was not good enough to hand her a chance at a medal, the 27-year-old was still pleased with what she has achieved this season.
She explained: “I can’t complain, firstly to make the team because three weeks before my trials I had a niggle so I didn’t even think I was going to make the trials.
“Then to go to the trials, run a personal best and to make the team, I already thought I had exceeded my expectations for the year.
“And then to come to the Olympics, make the semi finals and be running against what I would call top of the range world class athletes is brilliant. So I am more than happy.”
Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier sprinter Oyepitan couldn’t hide her disappointment after she bowed out of the third heat of the semis.
She produced a quicker time of 23.14 to finish sixth, with American Sanya Richards-Ross and Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce advancing, but revealed she was not happy with her time.
“Not getting into the final is beyond disappointing as far as I am concerned,” she said.
“It is not what I came here to do. The time was rubbish. It just wasn’t a great race. It obviously wasn’t my day.”
She added: “It is an honour to run in front of this home crowd, but I just wish I had done better.”
