Bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz spoke of his pride today following his exploits in the Olympic high jump final last night.
The Enfield-born competitor has risen to prominence following a fine year and was backed to succeed at London 2012.
A gold medal proved a step too far for the 24-year-old but his jump of 2.29m was enough to see him earn a share of third place, an achievement he was rightly proud of.
He explained: “I am really proud. I won an Olympic medal in front of a home crowd. Not many people get the opportunity to seize that, but I did it.”
And Grabarz also spoke of the incredible atmosphere inside the Olympic Stadium as the home support spurred him on to achieve a place on the podium.
He continued: “It was really, really enjoyable. I had a great time.
“To perform in front of that, the pressure is increased, especially, in the public’s eye coming from nowhere and to all of a sudden have people telling me I am a medal favourite. It is not easy and you try and ignore it but you always hear it.
“So to actually perform up to those expectations was something to be really proud of.”
He added: “To know there are 80,000 people there saying ‘Come on, you can get over this bar', is a really nice feeling.”
